At first glance, one wonders why, with so many land tour options that combine Australia and New Zealand for three weeks, it would be necessary to do this program by private jet. But the details of the sightseeing program reveals an approach that goes more in-depth than tours that rely on scheduled air services. We are extremely impressed with the unique approach to both historical as well as contemporary life touring. While we do question the idea of doing a private jet within one or two countries, if in-depth touring and convenience is a goal, this excellent program hits all the right notes.

PRIVATE JET PROFILE You will be flying a smaller but well-regarded FOKKER 70 Jet, an aircraft used commercially in Europe and the United States for flights of less than two hours. There are 46 2×2 VIP-style seats on an aircraft operated by Alliance Airlines.

THE DETAILED DAY-BY-DAY ITINERARY

DAYS 1 – 3: QUEENSTOWN, SOUTH ISLAND, NEW ZEALAND– Hotel St. Moritz

Meet fellow travelers, experts, and staff at lunch before kicking off our adventure with an exhilarating jet boat ride on the Shotover River, which winds through dramatic canyons. Gather for a welcome reception at dinner in the evening. The next day, soar up into the mountains in a charter helicopter, taking in sweeping views of the dramatic scenery surrounding Queenstown. Land at Moonlight Lodge, set high among rugged slopes covered with tussock grass and beech trees, and sit down to a lovely farmstyle lunch. Take the long route on the way back, flying over the spectacular Milford Sound and alighting amid the mountaintops for a panoramic view of Lake Wakatipu. On our final day in Queenstown, choose from two excursions. Meet a park zoologist at the Kiwi Birdlife Park to learn about wildlife conservation efforts and witness a kiwi feeding. Or head into the Central Otago region for lunch and a wine-tasting tour at some of the area’s finest wineries. DAYS 4 – 5: ROTORUA AND NAPIER, NORTH ISLAND– The Farm at Cape Kidnappers

Our first flight by private jet brings us to Rotorua, a city built partially upon geothermal land on the North Island. This bubbling expanse of mud pools, geysers, and hot springs is considered sacred by the indigenous Maori people, who have adapted their beliefs and lifestyles to the unpredictable earth. Immerse yourself in this ancient culture and learn about their ancestral connection to nature during an exclusive lunch at the Turama Retreat. Continue by private jet on a short flight to Napier and settle into our delightful lodge, a working sheep and cattle farm on the North Island’s eastern coast that is considered one of New Zealand’s top accommodations. Join a shepherd for a tour of the farm the next morning, and watch a demonstration of the farm dogs mustering the sheep. Then choose from a variety of activities, such as monitoring kiwis and their hatchlings with local experts or visiting the Cape Sanctuary to spot rare native birds and reptiles, including the tuatara—an endemic lizard-like creature that coexisted with the dinosaurs. DAYS 6 -7: SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA– Park Hyatt Sydney

Fly to Auckland to clear customs and immigration and continue across the Tasman Sea to Sydney. Upon arrival, transfer to our waterfront hotel. The next morning, head for the historic Rocks district on a guided walking tour. Trace early colonial history as you stroll past old pubs and cottages where Australia’s colorful first European settlers built their lives. End the tour at the legendary Sydney Opera House and explore this masterpiece of architecture and engineering with a private guide. Half of the group will do these tours in reverse order. Then set sail on a luxury cruise on Sydney Harbour, hearing the history of this famous waterway as you glide past iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Opera House, and sail into beautiful bays and coves. DAYS 8 – 10: HOBART TASMANIA– MACq 01 Hotel

Fly south to the beautiful island state of Tasmania, once the site of Australia’s most notorious penal settlement. Today the island is known for its dramatic landscapes—from glaciated mountains to rainforests and stunning beaches—as well as its thriving cultural scene. Touch down in the port city of Hobart, situated on the Derwent River. The city’s deep-water port led to rapid growth during the 1800s, when Hobart became a center for whaling and sealing. After lunch, visit the Cascades Female Factory to hear real-life accounts of Australia’s female convicts from the 1800s. Then stroll amid the charming cottages and gardens of Battery Point, one of Hobart’s oldest areas. The next day, encounter Tasmanian devils at the Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary and learn about recent conservation successes that have brought the largest carnivorous marsupials back from the brink of extinction. After lunch, sample whiskies and other spirits at Sullivans Cove Distillery, makers of superior, small-batch single malt whiskies. This evening, visit the Museum of Old and New Art (Mona). Situated on the grounds of a historic vineyard, the museum features subterranean galleries built into the side of a cliff. Enjoy a private opening of the museum and a self-guided tour, followed by dinner in the Nolan Gallery. Choose from several excursions the following day. Step back to another era on a guided tour of the haunting ruins of Port Arthur, a 19th-century penal settlement set on a stunning peninsula. Sample local cheese and charcuterie, cool-climate wines, and pastries on a foodie tour of Hobart’s own producers. DAYS 11-12: ADELAIDE– Mayfair Hotel

Arrive in Adelaide, South Australia’s cultural hub. Encounter Australia’s most iconic creatures on a behind-the-scenes tour of Cleland Wildlife Park, home to kangaroos, wallabies, koalas, emus, and more. In the evening, indulge your palate with an unforgettable food and wine experience at the Penfolds Magill Estate, where wines have been crafted since 1844. Then head into the Barossa Valley, one of Australia’s best known wine regions. Soak up the rare mix of Australian and German heritage as you sample excellent vintages at renowned wineries, including the Seppeltsfield Centennial Cellar. DAYS 13 – 14: ULURU AND BROOME– Cable Beach Club Resort & Spa

Rise early for a tour of the Adelaide Central Market, where merchants and producers offer tastings of their gourmet concoctions. Then fly to Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, home to Uluru, Australia’s sacred monolith. Encounter this mass of red sandstone, which measures nearly six miles in circumference and rises 1,142 feet. Hear the creation story of the people who have lived here for tens of thousands of years, and witness the mystical beauty of the rock and its gorges. Enjoy a tea at the base of Uluru before a visit to the cultural center to learn more about the indigenous Anangu people. Later, continue by private jet to Broome, a city on the Indian Ocean that is known for its gorgeous beaches. Settle into a beach resort on celebrated Cable Beach. The next day, travel by seaplane into the heart of the Kimberley for a fast boat adventure through Horizontal Falls. DAYS 18 – 20: MELBOURNE– Park Hyatt Melbourne

Land in Melbourne, one of the world’s great cosmopolitan cities, which blossomed in the 1850s when gold was discovered nearby. In the afternoon, head for Phillip Island, just off the coast, and venture along treetop boardwalks with a park ranger to view wildlife up close at the Koala Conservation Reserve. Then witness the famous Penguin Parade, when little penguins waddle from surf to dunes at dusk after a day of fishing. Alternatively, tour the Old Melbourne Gaol, where some of Australia’s most notorious outlaws met their end, and learn about the site’s role during the Gold Rush and World War II. Enjoy a private dinner at the City Watch House. On our final day, stroll through the arcades and lanes of the city with a guide, admiring art deco and Victorian buildings, and visiting the studios of artists and craftspeople. Then cruise the Yarra River for a different perspective on this lovely city, seeing some of its contemporary neighborhoods and the Royal Botanic Gardens. Staying on-site at Machi Picchu would have been preferable and we wish there was another day or two for elevation acclimation.

ITINERARY ANALYSIS: True World Cruise in the biblical sense but 30 days in South America along with weeks spent in California and Mexico seem to miss goals of a true bucket list journey. The sheer number of ports along with extra time in many, has to place this among the top three world cruise programs we have examined.

THE VESSEL: The Nautica was not designed or built by Oceania. The ship was originally built twenty-one years ago for Renaissance Cruise Line. This is an excellent value but the Nautica should not be considered a five-star vessel. Standard staterooms are smaller than average and for a voyage of this length anything less than a Penthouse accommodation will seem claustrophobic. The ship is, we feel, due for a major refurbishment. The food onboard rivals that of 5-star competitors including Regent Seven Seas which also belongs to the Norwegian Cruise Holdings Group. We rank Oceania near the top when it comes to value and that is important for a cruise of this length. On-board lecture programs have not rivaled some of Oceania’s competitors in the World Cruise Market.

ITINERARY ANALYSIS: This exemplary itinerary includes enough bucket list destinations to qualify as a “one ship shop of wonders”. The full 140-Day port intensive schedule includes only two days at sea – a logistical accomplishment of staggering proportions. The short taste of South America at the beginning and even shorter end in Europe reflect the needs of many travelers with significant time devoted to exploring the South Pacific and Tahiti and much of cultural Asia. There is considerable time spent in the Middle East and a wonderful collection of stops in Africa. Australia is short-changed and New Zealand is skipped entirely. But that has to do with time spent in Bali and other Indonesian out-islands as well as exotics like Papua New Guinea. THE VESSEL – The Mariner was designed and built for Regent launching in 2001 with a major refurbishment in 2018. Touch down in Jaipur, the capital of the desert state of Rajasthan, and settle into our splendid accommodations at Rambagh Palace, a former residence of the Maharaja of Jaipur. Set out to explore the “pink city,” where sauntering camels share the road with rickshaws, and majestic, rose-colored monuments overlook bustling bazaars. Visit the 16th-century Amber Fort, the historic seat of Jaipur’s Rajput rulers. Admire the fort’s enchanting architecture, a blend of Mughal and Rajput styles, and its exquisitely carved, hand-painted ceilings. Or take a drive through old Jaipur to see the city’s pink sandstone walls and many beautiful gates; marvel at the honeycomb façade of the Hawa Mahal, or the Palace of the Winds; and discover the magnificent City Palace. Time permitting, stop by the 18th-century royal observatory known as Jantar Mantar.

DAYS 7- 8 : RANTHAMBHORE NATIONAL PARK,– The Oberoi Vanyavilas Wildlife Resort, Aman-i-Khas, or Sujan Sher Bagh

Drive southeast to Ranthambore National Park (do we want to add 3.5 hour drive) , once the private hunting ground of the maharajas and now a protected habitat for the endangered Bengal tiger. After many years of declining numbers, India’s population of Bengal tigers has finally begun to increase thanks to conservation efforts. Set out on safari in 4x4s to search for leopards; sloth bears; and the sambar, Asia’s largest species of deer. With luck, we may glimpse the elusive tiger. If you wish, visit Dastkar Ranthambore, an NGO dedicated to improving livelihoods in the surrounding communities, and see locally made embroidery, block prints, and pottery. DAYS 9 – 11 : YALA NATIONAL PARK AND BUNDALA NATIONAL PARK, SRI LANKA– Wild Coast Tented Lodge or Uga Chena Hut

Anyway, this is what the marketing folks would say about this itinerary.

We are less enthusiastic. There are 36 days at sea for a 34% percentage of the total. This strikes us as excessive and can account for several interesting parts of this itinerary, such as Israel and the Middle East, where we feel much more could have been included for a more comprehensive look at the region. Guests who board on the 5^th, are on the ship until January 28^th before leaving North America and finally reaching French Polynesia. This is clearly a cruise for those more sedentary who do not view a world cruise as an opportunity to collect as wide an array of destination experiences as possible. The cruise ends in Rome but, sadly, there are no iconic Italian ports included.

Space ratio per guest is excellent and the Serenity is large enough to handle whatever the sea gods may toss her way. Standard staterooms are tight. There are smaller inside staterooms perfect for children or those on a world cruise budget.

ITINERARY ANALYSIS: Excellent worldwide itinerary, especially for the first-time Ultimate trip guest. Only 11% of voyage is devoted to days at sea on this beautifully scaled routing. Those who begin the full cruise in Miami will spend 25 days before finally departing the States, Central America, and Mexico before calling on Kauai. The extra time devoted to New Zealand the return crossing ending back in Florida are highlights on this “no need to fly” world cruise.

THE VESSEL – The Mariner was designed and built for Regent launching in 2001 with a major refurbishment in 2018. The ship is extremely spacious and is considered one of the world’s few “All-Suite” ships. The very worst category on the Mariner, Category “G”, is still 300 sq. ft with a comfortable unobstructed balcony and a stocked refrigerator. Unlike several of the vessels on the World Cruise List, it would not be necessary to seriously upgrade one’s cabin aboard this ship.
